*We're going to look at a scene in Act I that the movie version left out. It's when the Kellers are getting ready for Annie's arrival. It tells us a lot about the family and how they view Helen.
*In your packet of assignments, on the second page is a paper with a drawing of a scale on it. In groups, you are going to weigh the pros and cons of keeping Helen at home or of having her institutionalized. Then, we'll compile all the reasons for both on the board and see what your opinion is.

ASSIGNMENT: Make flashcards for Vocabulary Week 11 words; read "Darkness at Noon" and complete the worksheet. The drawing on the worksheet must be in color!!

EXTRA Credit: If you're interested in doing an extra credit project for this unit, see me for a list of ideas. They will be due on Monday, May 5.

1. Short Story Unit Test - We won't plan anything else for today. You will have all of both class periods to work. Here are the directions - you already have a copy of the questions.

Directions:

1. Choose any three of the following questions to answer.

2. Write a rough draft on your own paper.

3. Be sure each answer begins with a topic sentence, includes details (events, quotations) from the stories we read, and ends with a closing sentence. Don’t forget to indent.

4. Your answers should each be 6-10 sentences in length.

5. Proofread! Proofread! Proofread! I will answer your questions; I will not DO it for you! I will only read to the fourth mechanical error in each answer; after that your choice is to come in on your own time and re-do them or to take a zero.

6. You may use your Writers INC books, a dictionary, and the story spreadsheet if it is completely filled out; you may ask questions.

7. Write a final, very-best-that-you-can-do copy on theme paper. Use blue or black ink ONLY and write on ONLY one side of the paper. Staple your final draft and hand it in. Be sure your name is on it!

ASSIGNMENT FOR TUESDAY: Complete the opinion survey you picked up when you handed in your test. Complete the first column ONLY following the directions at the top of the survey. Be ready to explain a reason for each of your responses!!

5. Short Story Unit - We'll begin a new unit today on short stories.
*First, you'll listen to a "chalk talk" about the stories we'll be reading so you can make a choice about which one you want to work on for you project for this unit.
*After that, working in small groups, we'll go through and review a list of literary terms. If there's time today, then we'll go over them together.

ASSIGNMENT: Vocabulary Worksheet for Week 7 is due Monday; in the "Assignment" section of your notebook, make a list of 10 actions that would make you call someone your enemy. After you make your list, then number them from 1-10, with 1 being the worst thing anyone could do to you.

EXTRA CREDIT

Use the following as the beginning of a story:

The dead tree stood silhouetted against the setting sun. Two figures approached, shuffling along the dusty road.

Finish the story. You should:
*include conversation between the two characters. Their conversation should reveal who they are, where they've been, why they're there, and where they're going
*use correctly at least 10 of our vocabulary words (underline them in your story)
*be sure your story has a beginning, a middle, and an end
*give your story a title
*either write it legibly in ink on theme paper (one side only) or type it
*include the signatures of at least five people who have read it


Your story should be a minimum of one typed page. It can be as much longer as you wish. This is due no later than Wednesday, March 26.

In the memo sheet you must: 1) explain why your book won't be done today; 2) outline your plan for finishing it on your own; 3) give the date you will have it done and turned in. You will not lose credit if you stick to the deadline you set yourself. If you turn it in after that date, you will get half credit.

2. Vocabulary - We'll review this week's words...and the parts of speech. We'll also watch a segment of Grammar Rock - the segment about nouns.

3. Reading - Since we've been in the PC lab this week, we haven't taken a lot of time for our reading, so today we'll spend some extra time.

4. Topic Sentences & Paragraphs:
a. Read a paragraph about alligators and divide it into paragraphs. Explain why you made the choices you did.
b. Answer the questions "What is a paragraph? What is a topic sentence?" We'll write a formula for a topic sentence.
c. We'll look at some sentences and decide whether or not they fit the formula.
d. On the pink handout we're using, there's a sheet listing some traits about a dog. We're going to "design" a class pet and then, as a large group, write a topic sentence and then a paragraph describing it.


ASSIGNMENT: For Tuesday (Monday we'll be back on the computers), you are going to follow the same procedure we used for writing the paragraph about the dog to do a paragraph about your favorite relative. The relative must be human! Sorry, you can't use your pet. Use the pink handout sheet I give you and write the completed paragraph in the section on the top half of the sheet, and then list each individual sentence in the section at the bottom. electronic data bases and looking for web sites with information. You will have to turn in a written evaluation (CARRDSS) of any web site you decide to use. At the end of the hour, your Author Profile should be completed and turned in, along with your list of sources, and your web site evaluations.
Today we'll be using the mobile laptop lab in the library, and Mrs. Loughren will go over with you the guidelines for using these computers. You and your book partner will need just one laptop.

We'll work in the library, where we'll go over the procedures for using the mobile laptop lab, and then you and your partner will research your author using the data bases and web sites. You will have to justify the reliability of any web site you use for information.

5. PC Lab - Complete a scavenger hunt using the data bases: EBSCO, World Book Online, Accuweather, AP Archives. You will find several specific items in each data base and have me initial your sheet when you find it.

EXTRA CREDIT: Make a poster illustrating/explaining on of the following: the ten categories of the Dewey Decimal System, any of the electronic data bases, the criteria for evaluating web sites (CARRDSS). This should be done neatly and according to the standards you learned in science last semester. It must be in color. See me if you need drawing paper - this must be bigger than a sheet of printer paper!! These are due March 5, one week from today.

We'll divide into teams to play, and the prizes will be extra credit points.

If by the end of the period Thursday, you and a partner have not signed up for your choice for the Author Books project, I will assign partners and authors as needed.

4. Nonfiction vs Reference Books - First, you'll view a PowerPoint presentation on the two types of books and take some notes in the "notes" section of your class notebook. After that, you will be given a list of book titles that represent a cross-section (25-30 on all topics) of reference books found in our library. You'll divide into small groups and make some educated guesses about the book titles on the list: Which Dewey category does each fall into? What type of information do you think the book probably contains? When do you think you might have to use it? We'll go over the list at the end of the hour. It's important you pay close attention when we go over what the books are actually about; it will help you tomorrow!

ASSIGNMENT: Vocabulary Worksheet over Week 4 is due Thursday, February 21.

EXTRA CREDIT: Choose a comic strip from the newspaper, being sure to choose one that is at least four frames long. Rewrite the conversation in the strip using correct dialogue format and adding any narrative that's necessary. Use looseleaf paper and write them in ink, please -- or type them. These are due by Friday, February 22.

4. Dewey Decimal System - You will go to the library and find books whose call numbers fit in each section of the Dewey Decimal System, including a biography and a collection of short stories. On the worksheet, you'll write the title, the name of the author, and the exact call number of each book. This is due today.

5. Author Books - While we do our library unit, you will be completing a research project using each of the resources we discuss in class. At the end of the unit, you will produce a booklet about one of the authors whose work we'll be reading in class this semester. Today we're going to go over the list of authors (slide show) and the details about the assignment (2 handouts). You will be working on this with a partner of your own choosing (subject to my approval - if I think you won't work efficiently together, I won't let you work together), so you and your partner will need to sign up for the author you wish research. These choices must be made by next Wednesday.

6. If there's any extra time, you may use it to work on your floor plans. Remember, they're due when we come back after the long week-end.

Extra Credit: Design a new cover for the book you're currently reading. It must be done in color and can be done on 8 1/2 x 11 white paper. Include an explanation of your design and why you chose it. IF YOU HAVEN'T HANDED IN YOUR POEM ABOUT YOUR PARTNER YET, IT'S LATE!

1. MUG Shot - First we're going to review nonrestrictive & restrictive phrases and appositives. Then we'll take the MUG Shot Quiz. If you got an A on the last one, remember you don't have to take this one -- but I won't remind you!

2. After you finish your quiz, spend some time working on your reading. Remember, the deadline is only a week away!

3. Vocabulary - Draw pictures and write definitions for Week 4. The words are: cherish, omen, charity, perish, gaunt, emerge, subside, shroud, malice, solemnity. Your flashcards for this list are due Friday, February 15.

3. Reading Workshop - Keep working on your books and your Reading Logs. Remember all is due Feb. 21.

4. Antique Spanish Sea Captain's Map - We're going to look at a transparency reproduction of a Spanish Sea Captain's Map from the late 1700's. You're going to be asked to list all the ways it is different from a map we'd use today.

5. Library Tour - Mrs. Loughren is going to give you a specially guided tour of the library, pointing out several of the reference tools and study aids you will be using for the next 3 1/2 years. While she's doing this, you'll be making a rough diagram of the library in your class notebook, which you will use in completing...

6. Floor Plan Assignment - Back in the room, we'll go over your assignment: drawing a floor plan of the library listing all of the references/study aids/miscellaneous items found on the list you're given (remember, you have your notes from the tour to refer to). Your floor plan will be done in the style of the old Spanish map we looked at, rather than like a modern map. These floor plans are due Friday, February 15. Refer to the grading criteria on the back of your instruction sheet.

4. Poems - Spend a few minutes with your bio partner going over the poems you've written about each other. See if there's something you want your partner to be sure to include in his/her poem. We'll spend a few minutes looking at the layout of the model poem.

5. PC Lab - We'll go to the PC Lab (sorry, you'll have assigned seats) and type your poems according to the following directions:
a. Center the title at the top
b. Center your name and the word "By" under the title
c. Choose a different font for each stanza/category. Choose a font that reflects the topic.
d. Import at least three clip art images to illustrate your poem.
e. Save your poem to your server account. If you have a flash drive, save it there, too.
f. Print a black and white copy of your poem and double check it.
g. You will need to print a color copy. If you have a flash drive and can print it at home, that's fine; otherwise, you'll need to print it from the color printer in my room. The deadline for doing this is Wednesday, February 13. Hand in the color copy.

EXTRA CREDIT: Write five original sentences using vocabulary words from the first three vocabulary lists. Each sentence must contain a words from Week 1, a word from Week 2, and a word from Week 3. Remember the "forbidden verbs." These must be handed in by Tuesday, February 12.
